What we today refer to as Halloween, All Saint’s Day and the Day of the Dead has a thousand-year-old equivalent in ancient Scandinavia and the North - the Old Norse celebration of álfablót, the sacrifice to the elves. During the Viking Age, the elves were closely associated with ancestors and honored as the spirits of the dead.
